Checkerboard Cake Recipe
Ingredients:
1 pkg. Duncan Hines yellow cake mix1 pkg. Duncan Hines chocolate cake mix
1/2 soft butter
1/4 tsp. salt
4 1/2 c. sifted confectioner's sugar
2 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract
1/4 c. (approximately) milk or light cream
6 sq. unsweetened chocolate, melted
3 c. sifted confectioner's sugar
1/4 c. hot water
2 eggs
1/2 c. soft butter
Cooking Directions:
Bake cakes as directed in sheet pans. Cool thoroughly. Cut in strips. Place side by side, alternately. Reverse for second layer. Put together with Buttercream Frosting. Frost outside of cake with Hungarian Chocolate Frosting.BUTTERCREAM FROSTING:
1/2 soft butter1/4 tsp. salt4 1/2 c. sifted confectioner's sugar2 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract1/4 c. (approximately) milk or light cream
With mixer at medium speed, thoroughly mix butter, salt, 1 cup sugar until light and fluffy. Add rest of sugar and milk alternately, beating until mixture is very smooth and of spreading consistency. Add vanilla.
HUNGARIAN CHOCOLATE FROSTING:
6 sq. unsweetened chocolate, melted3 c. sifted confectioner's sugar1/4 c. hot water2 eggs1/2 c. soft butter
Combine chocolate, sugar and water. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well with mixer after each addition. Add butter, 1 tablespoon at a time, beating until thick enough to spread.
